Mangatapu: native planting with gravel path and sleepers

Landscaping & garden construction in the Waikato

Soft landscaping first: soil, structure and planting that will still look good in ten years. Then the paths, edging and stone that hold it all together.

The problem we solve

Gardens, planting, edging, paths and new lawns, built properly.

A new garden that fails in its first summer usually failed before it was planted: compacted clay, no drainage, plants set too deep or too close, and no plan for water. We see it on new builds around Morrinsville and Matamata every year.

Our approach starts underground. We prepare the soil properly, sort out drainage where it's needed, choose plants that suit the site, and plant them the right way at the right time of year. Then we add the structure that keeps a garden looking cared for: clean edging, a path that goes where you walk, mulch and stone that suppress weeds and hold moisture.

KLG is a horticulture-led team moving into more hard landscaping. Planting, garden beds and lawns are our core; paving, steps and decorative stone come as part of the same job, so you deal with one crew from bare section to finished garden.

What's included

  • Soil preparation, garden mix and drainage
  • New garden beds and border planting

How it works

What happens when you get in touch

  1. 1

    Site visit and quote

We look at the section, talk through what you want and give you a clear quote, or a design first if the project needs one.

  2. 2

    Preparation

Clearing, shaping, soil improvement and drainage. This is where most of the long-term result is decided.

  3. 3

    Structure and planting

Edging, paths and stone go in, then the planting: right plant, right place, right depth, mulched and staked.

  4. 4

    Establishment

We'll tell you exactly how to water and care for the new garden, or our maintenance team can look after it through its first seasons.

New lawns

A good lawn is mostly what's underneath it. We prepare the base, deal with clay and drainage, bring in lawn mix where it's needed and level properly, then lay turf or sow seed to suit the property and the season. We recently laid new turf on a commercial frontage in Morrinsville, taking it from bare ground to a finished lawn in a day.

For lifestyle blocks and rural properties we'll recommend hard-wearing grass types and a realistic establishment plan for a Waikato summer.

Materials we work with

We source landscaping materials locally, including decorative stone such as Waikato Fleck, Mangatangi Gold and river pebbles, timber and corten steel edging, and paving. We'll talk you through what suits your garden, your planting and your maintenance level.
